Do They Really Believe It?

 A hit song of 1969, written by Peter Sarstedt, contains the lines "But where do you go to my lovely, when you're alone in your bed? Tell me the thoughts that surround you, I want to look inside your head, yes I do", and I often feel that it is a pertinent question that might be asked of the woke who so dominate public debate at the moment. Do they really believe all the nonsense they claim is true, or are there reasons that led them to say what, in their heart of hearts, they must know is ridiculous?

Lewis Carroll broached this in the White Queen's famous advice in Through the Looking-Glass, when she answers Alice's laughing exclamation There's no use trying, one can't believe impossible things'. The Queen replies "I daresay you haven't had much practice. When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast".

It would be very strange to be one of these so called progressives, if they actually are convinced that the absurd statements they make are in accordance with facts and reality. They would have to hold the opinion that a man can become a woman, just by saying they are, that the Jewish people are to be blamed for the barbaric attack made by them by Hamas terrorists, and that the CIA destroyed the twin towers. The Greens are in a class of their own, one of their councillors accusing patriots who choose to fly our flag of being as not merely racist, but criminals, and that they should be imprisoned for so doing, and that dangerous drugs like heroin should be legalised. They are riven with antisemitism, an ancient hatred beloved of bigots.

In foreign affairs progressives support Britain, a country already deep in debt, paying billions to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, while they are fanatical in their hatred of our democratic ally Israel, completely ignoring the actions of those who are murdering hundreds of thousands in the Sudan, the oppression of the Burmese minorities, particularly the Rohingya, Karen, and Christian communities, who face systemic oppression, including arbitrary arrests, forced labor, and genocide, and the suppression of Tibet by China, as well as that country's committing crimes against humanity, and possibly genocide, against the Uyghur population and other mostly-Muslim ethnic groups. They are obsessed with the suppose faults of the Jewish state, clearly because of their ingrained antisemitism.

As far as economics are concerned, it is perfectly possible to hold differing opinions without being deranged, but the refusal of the woke Left to learn from the lessons of history is absurd. Nowhere has socialism, and its big brother communism worked, but the woke are consumed with a view that capitalism, the only proven method of creating prosperity, is in some ways responsible for conditions comparable to the Britain of Charles Dickens, a total myth.

We know that there are literally tends of millions of those living in the third world would love to move to the first, and the progressive Left would just open our borders to accommodate them, thereby destroying our country. The tide of illegal immigrants, sweeping in, and undermining the British working class, are supported, while the vital interests of the latter are treated with contempt. These Left still pretends that it represents the working class against the evil bosses, but the reverse is true.The manner in which the progressives refuse to accept the result of the 2016 EU referendum illustrates just how little they care for the wishes of the ordinary citizens of this country. Their espousal of the net zero claptrap, which is set fair to destroy what industries we still possess, show that they put cosying up to Eurocrats ahead of working people.

Of course I am prepared to admit that while I might very well be wrong on many issues, these people are immovable. So why are they so convinced of their own righteousness?

Unfortunately, as far as youngsters are concerned, years of brainwashing at schools, and universities, have made them incapable of perceiving matters with any sort of objectively. They are no more able to see the truth than would be German youngsters in the 1930s, where boys were forcibly inducted into the German Youngsters (Deutsches Jungvolk), then into the Hitler Youth (Hitlerjugend), while girls were in the Young Girls' League (Jungmädelbund) before moving into the League of German Girls (Bund Deutscher Mädel - BDM). They cannot be blamed but cannot be regarded as able to understand reality.

The older progressives have either never moved on from the illusions of their youth, or actually benefit from the current situation, holding positions which would not exist were it not for the current dominance of our country's social policies by those with these insane views. They are also incapable of breaking free from the groupthink of their immediate peers, usually those living in academia, and the North London enclaves of the progressive elite.

I return to my original question, what do these people really think when they are alone in their bed. Have they adopted Orwell's doublethink, summed up by O'Brian of the Inner Party's diktat, "Old thinkers unbellyfeel Ingsoc", or do they know that they are spouting absolute madness, and don't care? Whatever the truth they must be resisted, and overthrown, if our county is to survive in any sort of recognisable form.
