COVID 19: The Birth of a Killer

There cannot be many people who are not aware of the virus classified as Covid-19 by the WHO in March 2020 – indeed some people may have contracted the virus – as did the author of this novel. The pandemic hit the UK in March 2020, and lasted for between two-three years, but there were many variations of the virus emerged and it is thought by many that we will never be completely clear of its effects. Even before the outbreak of Covid 19, in 2002 there had been a previous pandemic named SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). We know what Covid is, and to a certain extent, we know how to combat it through a mixture of isolation and inoculation. What is still unknown, however, is where it came from originally: to examine the various theories, one first has to ascertain exactly how the infection spread.

Both SARS and COVID (which are related viruses) are 'zoonotic' in nature, which means that, unlike the majority of infections, they can be spread between species - such as from animals to humans, making them far more dangerous. The proponents of this theory suggest that the infection was transmitted to humans, probably through proximity to live (infected) bats – such as in a street market. Another zoonotic theory suggests that exposure to the virus happened after people had consumed infected bats – in certain parts of the world such as Asia, bats have been consumed for thousands of years, and are commonly eaten today. Both of these are plausible and serve as a very convenient explanation as to the source of the infection. There is, however, another possible explanation and that revolves around the accusation that both SARS and COVID 19 were deliberately manufactured as a weapon of biological warfare – a 'bioweapon' – most likely manufactured at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) in Wuhan, China. The WIV had been at the centre of the Chinese bioweapons programme since around 2005, and had been associated with viral 'escapes' since around that time. As Dr George Fu Gao the Former Head of the Chinese Centre for Disease Control admitted in April 2023: "SARS is a turning point in the history of laboratory biosafety in China … We had some lab leakage at that time…"1

In 2015 a book was written entitled The Unnatural Origin of SARS and New Species of Man Made Viruses As Genetic Bioweapons - written by a group of Chinese military scientists and weapons experts – it very quickly disappeared from circulation – presumably as somebody in China realised the implications of such a document achieving worldwide circulation. The Chinese authorities have consistently denied any involvement in the production of such a weapon, and inspection by scientists from the WHO would appear to support their claim. However, not everyone is convinced, and there is continued and growing pressure on the Chinese authorities to give full, unfettered access to their bioweapons programme, and to publish their research findings. So was Covid caused through zoonotic transmission, or something far more sinister? Read the book and draw your own conclusions….
